Half Fold Greeting Cards

This is the traditional type of fold you see in most cards. One dimension of the card is folded in half and the front is decorated. Some people also refer to this as a tent fold card because it looks like a simple tent when itís done as a landscape card.

There are various ways you can cut and fold this to get a different look. The normal way this type of card is done is to start with an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of cardstock and cut the 11 inch side in half at 5 1/2 inches. You can then fold the 8 1/2 inch side at 4 1/4 inches. This gives you a card base that you can either open in portrait mode (longest edge goes up and down) or landscape mode (longest edge on the bottom).

Portrait Mode   Landscape Mode
You can also change this up though and start by cutting the 8 1/2 inch side in half and then folding the 11 inch side at 5 1/2 inches. This give you cards like this:

Portrait Mode   Landscape Mode

Another way get creative with this card type is to start with a different size of paper. Cut 12 x 12 cardstock in half and make a 6 x 6 card.* Make a card that fits in a standard business envelope by cutting an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet down to 8 1/2 x 7 and half folding it. If you have an envelope maker, the possibilities are endless.

*The USPS doesn't like square cards because their high speed sorters don't know which side is which so you have to pay extra to mail square envelopes.
