  1. Layout a tortoise and hat separately using digital brushes at 1.25x normal size in a digital imaging program like GIMP 2.0. You want a tortoise that is about 2 3/4" from head to tail that will fill the yellow mat.
  2. Print on a laser printer on white paper. If you use an inkjet printer, the ink may run when you color the image with your markers.
  3. Color tortoise body and hat with Copic markers. The shaded green areas are BG96 for the outside with YG96 on top. The intent was not as much shading as to create obvious color areas somewhat like a real tortoise, without introducing a lot of extra colors.
  4. Cut out tortoise and hat.
  5. Cut a 3 1/4" x 4 1/2" piece of pale yellow cardstock.
  6. Stamp 2 grass images at bottom using Ivy ink.
  7. Stamp Happy Belated Birthday at the top, offset down a little and to the right. Use black ink.
  8. Stamp Sorry I'm Late next it on a diagonal. You can mount both of these on one block but it is better to do this in two steps so you can get a good impression on the textured paper. Use black ink.
  9. Cut a 3 3/4" by 5" piece of light brown paper.
  10. Cut am 8 1/2" by 5 1/2" card base from green paper.
  11. Fold card base in half so front is 4 1/4" by 5 1/2".
  12. Mount brown mat onto green base.
  13. Mount yellow mat onto brown mat.
  14. Glue tortoise onto yellow mat. You can tape if you prefer but because of the shape you may find it easier to glue.
  15. Glue party hat onto tortoise and yellow mat.
  16. Add shadow on the ground behind tortoise using Copic N1 marker to the tortoise depth.
